Blustering winds. Ice patches. Snow blanketed streets.

With an artic blast outside—inside temperatures heated up at the Fifth Annual Space and Beyond 2005 charity event, February 24th, with the hot new fashions of Nami Ogawa.

After stepping into the Dejavu Lounge and coat checking that much needed heavy winter coat, you entered a warm low lighted atmosphere. The combination of a live band, oversized plush velvet chairs lining the red carpet runway, hors d'oeuvres, drinks, a silent auction, and the good spirits of all who attended was intoxicating.

Nami Ogawa was one of the five fashion designers of last year’s event and she returned this year, solo, to steal the show. Her sixteen pieces graced the runway along with a breath of fresh air.

The theme of the show was Dusk Fairy. The colors used were inspired by that time between afternoon and evening when twilight creeps in with aquas, minks, tans, wines, and browns. The unique hybrid mix of linen-silk fabric that Nami used had a light flowing feel that had everyone anxious for spring to arrive.

Artist Brian Holderman provided the retro graphics for the line. Nami and Brian work closely to produce the fresh new look for clothing in their ZETO line.

“What makes Nami’s clothes so unique is her great attention to detail and the great graphics are an added element,” Tom Watson, of the Talent Group Agency, said.

The Talent Group Agency provided five of the seven models for the show. When the models came out to strut down the red carpet, the live band, Exit XI, took a break from the spotlight.

All of the money raised goes straight back to the kids since everyone working for the event did so on a volunteer basis only.

The Space and Beyond event raises scholarship funds to give some of Pennsylvania’s deaf children a chance to attend the U.S. Space Camp in Alabama. While learning about the mental, physical, and emotional demands of an astronaut, the kids also have the opportunity to make friendships with their peers that can last a life time.

“The largest obstacle we had this year was the weather!” Amy Newland, chair of the event, said. “The weather really did hurt us.”

Due to the nasty winter weather making driving conditions hazardous, the charity function took a dive in donations this year.

“This event was put together really well. It was really fun. The fashion was eclectic, over-the-top and progressive,” Torey Penrod, 22, of Shadyside, said.

Donations are still being made and a few auction items are still up for bid. If you’re interested in making a donation or bidding, contact Amy Newland at amn01wpd@wpsd.org or 412-371-7000.
